Wushu

Objective of Wushu Enrichment Co-Curricular Activity @ Henry Park Primary School

The Wushu (武术) Enrichment Co-curricular Activity (ECCA) is organised by Henry Park Primary Parents Association (HPPA) in conjunction with Xuan Sports.

The objectives of the programme are as follows:

To promote family bonding.

  1. To encourage appreciation of Chinese culture.
  2. To encourage conversation in Chinese and subsequent improvement of the use of Chinese.
  3. To provide opportunities for physical exercise and character building such as discipline and respect.
  4. To learn a self-protection skill.

This is a pro-family activity that is opened to all HPPS students, their parents, students’ siblings, school teachers and their family members.

Benefits

Besides the health benefits of participating in a sport like Wushu, the Wushu ECCA also provides opportunities for bonds to be built between HPPS students, staffs and even their families. Students who fulfil the attendance criterion of the ECCA will also have it recognised in their report books. The Wushu ECCA also serves as a talent development platform in training selected potential students to take part in school performances such as Mid-autumn festivals and other events.

Syllabus

Students in the Wushu ECCA will be taught the basic techniques of Wushu, as well as, the different competitive routines (dependent on the suitability of the students).

Samples of the routines taught are:

  • Chang Quan: 3-duan, 5-duan, 1stInternational (三段,五段, 竞赛长拳)
  • Nan Quan: 3-duan, 5-duan, 1st International (三段,五段, 竞赛南拳)

  • Spear: 3-duan, 4-duan, 1st International (三段,四段, 竞赛枪)

At Henry Park, the classes are run at 3 levels:

  1. Beginner – for those who are new to the sport. Lessons taught at this level will focus on the basic techniques in Wushu, such as the hand movements and stances, as well as the basic routines such as the Wu Bu Quan (五步拳).
  2. Intermediate – for students who already have the basic skills in Wushu. Lessons taught at this level will focus on more challenging routines such as the 3-duan Chang Quan. Students will get to learn at least a weapon routine at this level, if they have achieved the appropriate skill levels required.
  3. Advanced – for students who will be competing in the National Primary Schools Wushu Championship. Lessons taught at this level will focus purely on honing the skills of the students for competitive-level Wushu.
